What Are The Most Common Bricks?

In every masonry structure, two types of bricks that are mostly used. They are burnt clay bricks and sun-dried clay bricks.

Bricks are commonly used in different masonry structures. There are two types of bricks. These bricks are burnt bricks and unburnt bricks. In Perth, they are used in making of permanent or temporary structures, driveway or patio paving and more. These bricks have several properties.

Burnt bricks

Burnt bricks or burnt clay bricks are the most traditional bricks. They have a wide range of applications. These bricks are widely used in every masonry constructions. Burnt clay bricks are durable in comparison to sun-dried clay bricks. However, based on the quality, durability and strength burnt bricks are classified into 4 different types. They are first-class bricks, second class bricks, third class bricks and fourth class bricks

• First-class burnt bricks: First class bricks are the high quality burnt bricks as compared other types. These bricks are generally moulded by the table moulding and after that burnt in very large kilns. These clay bricks have sharp edges, smooth surfaces and standard shapes. They are very popular because of their durability and high strength. They are used to make patio slabs, driveways, pathways, building structures. Due to the good properties, these bricks are quite expensive than others.

• Second class burnt bricks: Second class burnt bricks are medium quality bricks. These bricks are generally manufactured from the ground moulding process and also burnt in the kilns. However, they do not have sharp edges and smooth surfaces as compared to first-class bricks. Second class bricks have irregular shapes that offer high durability and strength.

• Third class burnt bricks: Third class bricks are not good quality bricks. They are generally used to develop temporary structures. These clay bricks are quite similar to the unburnt clay bricks. However, third class burnt bricks are not ideal for rainy areas.

• Fourth class bricks: Fourth class bricks have very low quality. They are generally used as crushed bricks and used to make concrete. These bricks are very brittle in nature.

Unburnt clay or sun-dried bricks

Unburnt clay or sun-dried brick is one of the common types of bricks. This brick is not very durable. So, it is generally used in temporary structures. There are 3 steps that are involved to make unburnt clay brick. The steps are clay preparation, moulding & drying process. The unburnt brick is dried under the sun. They are not too much water and fire-resistant.

Burnt and sun-dried both clay bricks are very cost-effective and used for different purposes. However, based on the quality, strength and shape, burnt clay bricks are more advantageous than unburnt clay bricks.
